The idea for TANDEM began when Director + Producer, Dana Kalmey, walked into a Jamba Juice on her visit to Oahu and stumbled upon a photo of World Champion Tandem Surfers, Kalani Vierra and Krystl Apeles, on the cover of Makai Ocean Lifestyle Magazine.
Dana had never heard of tandem surfing before, like countless others outside of the Hawaiian Islands.
She was so intrigued and impressed with what she'd seen and read that the next day she decided to dig around online for Krystl and Kalani's contact info. She found it, asked them if they'd like to talk story for a film (they said yes!), and a few days later she embarked on a new journey, flying to Kauai to officially meet and do some initial filming.
The rest is TANDEM history in the making.
